Summary
(1) Strains of type I pneumococcus varied considerably in their response to sulfapyridine. (2) These variations were not as great as the variations between types, observed previously,2 for all the strains of type I pneumococcus were susceptible to intensive therapy. (3) Reinfection experiments indicated that there were marked variations in the antigenicity of the strains, but these differences could not be correlated with the effectiveness of sulfapyridine, and therefore were not responsible for the strain variations noted above.
