Abstract
Summary
The effect of hypotaurine on taurine transport in isolated tubules from rat renal cortex was examined at the low Km (10 μM) and the high Km (2 mM) system. Taurine transport is inhibited at both sites, but hypotaurine appears to inhibit accumulation on the high Km system to a greater extent. The effect is competitive and hypotaurine has greater affinity for the taurine uptake system than does β-alanine. Finally, hypotaurine is shown to interact with the taurine carrier so that exchange diffusion is observed.
