Abstract
Summary
p-Chloromercuribenzoate (p-CMB) was employed to determine whether mitochondrial swelling correlates with gluta-minase I activation. Diuretic dosage of p-CMB produced swelling of in situ as well as isolated mitochondria. Ammonia production from glutamine rose two- to threefold with a rise in the ammonia produced per glutamine-utilized ratio from 1.25 to 1.97. The results are consistent with mitochondrial glutamin-ase I activity dependent upon mitochondrial permeability.
