Summary
Removal of the adrenal glands prevented osteitis fibrosa cystica that occurs when intact rats are fed diets containing high phosphate. It also decreased the incidence of calcific deposits in the kidney. It is suggested that decreased secretion of PTH may be one of the causative factors in the beneficial effects of adrenalectomy. Balance studies showed that intestinal absorption and renal excretion of calcium and phosphate by rats fed a normal diet were unaffected by adrenalectomy or the administration of prednisolone or aldosterone.
