Abstract
Summary
Some effects of zinc deficiency on the growth and development and protein synthesis in liver, heart and kidney of suckling rat pups have been assessed. The deficiency impaired the growth of the pups and organs, although this may have been largely due to undernutrition because values were similar to those obtained with pups from dams pair fed, and given adequate zinc. Zinc deficient pups displayed a reduced incorporation of leucine into protein in the three organs, particularly at 6 days of age; this effect was most pronounced in the liver.
