Abstract
Summary
The influence of chronic ethanol intake on carbohydrate metabolism was studied in mice. The results showed that daily ingestion of 10% or 30% ethanol for 30 or 60 days induced glucose intolerance, decreased and delayed glucose-mediated insulin response, as well as decreased peripheral insulin sensitivity. However, these metabolic derangements were not permanent as withdrawal of ethanol improved or restored these parameters to normal.
