Abstract
Summary
Renin, iso-renin, angiotensin I. angiotensin-converting enzyme, and angio-tensinases were measured in plasma and in various extrarenal tissues of rats. Despite complete suppression of plasma renin in rats bearing pituitary tumors iso-renin and all other components of the renin-angiotensin system were found to be at or above control concentrations. The results strongly suggest that there is local synthesis of iso-renin in extrarenal tissues.
Dr. M. Chrétien, Director of Pituitary Hormones Laboratory, Clinical Research Institute, Montreal, kindly provided us with tumor tissue for transplantation; it was originally obtained from the Mason Research Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts. This work was supported by a Group Grant from the Medical Research Council of Canada to the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal multidisciplinary research group on hypertension and by the German Research Foundation within the SBF 90 “Cardiovasculës System”.
The authors wish to thank Miss Céline Labarre and Mrs. Denise Pazzi for skillful technical assistance.
