Summary
The 12-day-old pups of rats fed 0.05% thyroid during gestation and lactation revealed normal levels of adrenal and serum corticosterone. However, thyroid feeding accelerated the maturation of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal-adrenal axis as ether stress and ACTH resulted in both corticosterone synthesis and release in 12-day-old pups whereas steroid release was not invoked in euthyroid rats. Hyperthyroidism may shorten the stress nonresponsive period.
