Abstract
Summary
The 5-HT content of whole blood of chickens is distributed mainly among the following cell types: (a) thrombocytes (50%), (b) lymphocytes (25–29%) and (c) polymorphs and monocytes (19–25%).
The significantly higher number of thrombocytes in male and female blood largely accounts for the high level of whole blood 5-HT (50%) even though the average concentration per cell type is higher in the lymphocytes than any other type. The concentration of 5-HT per lymphocytes and thrombocytes of female blood was higher than in male blood and this accounts for the sex difference in whole blood 5-HT.
