Abstract
Summary
Pseudopregnancy was induced in immature rats by the administration of PMS-HCG. On each of Days 1-15, five pair of highly luteinized ovaries were quartered and incubated in vitro for 120 min. The concentration of progesterone and 20α-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one (20α-OHP) in the incubation medium was then determined.
The temporal pattern of in vitro progestin secretion was similar to the temporal pattern of in vivo progestin secretion rates for similarly treated rats. Physiological luteolysis occurs by the morning of Day 11.
Financial support for the research was obtained from the National Science Foundation (GB-27118), the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (HD-05633), and the Population Council. We are also indebted to Dr. Elijah B. Romanoff, to Ms. Paula Herbst, and to Dr. John Jewell, Ayerst Laboratories, for donating the PMS and HCG.
