Summary
The epithelium of large and small ducts from human mammary gland was well maintained for 16 days in organ culture in a chemically defined medium. Significant DNA synthesis and mitosis occurred in the absence of supplemental hormones or serum. Addition of insulin and prolactin, however, did cause an increase in the number of cells synthesizing DNA.
