Effects of Prostaglandins E 1 and F 2 α on the Peripheral Circulation in the Cat 1

Summary

Ia administration of both PGE₁ and PGF_2α result in a decrease of the perfusion pressure in the isolated hindlimb preparation in the cat. This vasodilator action of PGE₁ corresponds well with and appears sufficient to account for the overall cardiovascular response to this agent. On the other hand, ia PGF_2α produces a variable and transient response in this isolated preparation. Direct vasodilation does not appear to be the only hemodynamic mechanism responsible for the overall depressor action of iv PGF_2α . It was observed that there is little, if any, tachyphylaxis to the direct vasodilator actions of PGF_2α.
