Abstract
Summary
A single intraperitoneal injection of zymosan into rats resulted in the engulfment of these particles by mast cells as well as by macrophages. There was a rapid fall in the numbers of free-floating mast cells which appeared to be a result of cellular clumping, and the numbers of peritoneal fluid mast cells remained depressed for at least 40 days. Unlike rats, neither mice, hamsters, nor gerbils displayed large scale engulfment of zymosan by peritoneal fluid mast cells.
