Abstract
Summary
A 12-fold increase in sodium excretion occurred in hypophysectomized or adrenalectomized water-loaded rats after ip injection of 10 μg of α-MSH compared with the low sodium excretion in saline-injected control rats. Potassium excretion also increased significantly but to a much lesser degree. There was no change in the urine output. The results indicate that neither the pituitary gland nor the adrenals mediate the natriuresis produced by MSH.
