Summary
Mannosamine at concentrations above 25 mM inhibit protein and nucleic acid biosynthesis in sarcoma 180 ascites cells during 30 min incubation. This inhibition could not be attributed to effects of the amino sugar on oxygen consumption, glycolysis, glucose utilization, or the intracellular levels of ATP or inorganic phosphate. A small reduction in the intracellular sodium and potassium concentrations occurred in cells incubated with mannosamine.
