Abstract
Summary
Macrophages exposed to chymotrypsin, trypsin, or pronase failed to ingest aggregated albumin or ferritin in vitro. Treatment with neuraminidase, RNase, albumin, or DFP-chymotrypsin had no apparent effect on macrophage pinocytosis. When cells treated with active chymotrypsin were subsequently maintained in culture, they recovered their ability to ingest protein. This recovery was inhibited by partial inhibition of protein synthesis with cycloheximide. Since chymotrypsin itself is not ingested, the results are interpreted to indicate the removal or inactivation of a surface factor required for pinocytosis that is generated by the cell.
