Abstract
Summary
Inactivated Semliki Forest virus, although unable to replicate, was capable of inducing interferon production in chick embryo cell cultures. The amount of interferon induced with inactivated virus was greater than that induced by the same amount of live virus. Viral specific RNA synthesis could not be detected in cells exposed to inactivated virus. It was concluded that synthesis of viral RNA was not necessary for the induction of interferon by this virus.
