Protection of Neonates against Whole-Body Radiation by the Administration of a Single Emulsified Injection of a Lipopolysaccharide During Pregnancy

Conclusion

A lipopolysaccharide (LPS) derived from E. coli was administered to mice during gestation yielding neonates that were highly resistant to lethal whole-body radiation. The LPS was given as an emulsion in mineral oil: the slow release from the emulsion eliminated the abortive and toxic effect of the LPS and prolonged its effective action.
