Summary
The respiratory burst associated with phagocytosis can be significantly inhibited by high concentrations of chloramphenicol without impairment of phagocytosis perse. The impaired respiratory burst reflects decreased activation of the HMP shunt probably through the mechanism of enzyme inhibition.
