Abstract
Summary
Inoculation of hamster embryo fibroblast cultures with human adenovirus type 5 resulted in inhibition of replication of heterologous challenge virus in these cells. No evidence for replication of infectious adenovirus 5 particles could be found in this system. Beginning on day 4 postadenovirus 5 inoculation, decreased yields of challenge viruses were noted as compared to control yields. This effect was seen with two RNA viruses (vesicular stomatitis virus and Semliki Forest virus) as well as with one DNA virus (herpes simplex virus). The inhibition in the adenovirus 5-treated cells did not appear to be interferon mediated. Adsorption of challenge virus to treated cells did not differ significantly from adsorption to control cells.
