Abstract
Summary
Mice subjected to femoral trauma in order to induce periosteal proliferation were exposed to atmospheres of either air, 15% O2 or 10% O2. TDR-3H autoradiographs revealed that 15% ambient O2 concentrations did not markedly affect the periosteal response. Ambient gas concentrations of 10% O2 reduced the labeling index of intact and traumatized femurs only slightly. The decreased ambient concentrations of O2 do not appear to affect the trauma site sufficiently to enhance a local tissue factor capable of stimulating cell proliferation.
