Abstract
Summary
We aspirated peritoneal fluid from newborn, weanling, and adult mice of both sexes. From the time the mice were born and up to their maturity, mesothelial cells gradually increased in numbers in females but not in males. Lymphocytes also increased with advancing age from birth, however, the adult male count was lower than the mature female distribution. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes and mast cells were lower in mature animals than day-old mice. We observed a 4-fold difference in histiocyte counts between samples from adult males and females. Barr bodies were seen only in newborn females, and daisy cells were seen only at weaning.
