Abstract
Summary
The effect of in vivo hyperthermia on protein synthesis has been studied in rabbits. The level of activity of phosphoenolpyrucate carboxykinase has been used as an index of protein synthesis. When rabbits were subjected to about 46 hours of fever at 106°F, the activity of this enzyme in liver mitochondria was significantly reduced. In light of the effect of stress and glucose on the level of activity of the enzyme, the data indicate that the depression is the result of decreased protein synthesis.
