Abstract
Summary
Following eradication of erythroid marrow by single injection of 5-FU, spontaneous repopulation began on day 6 and resulted in a sharp rise in 59Fe incorporation on day 9/10. Mice which received a large dose of erythropoietin within 32 hours after 5-FU, repopulated their erythroid marrow 72 hours after 5-FU and showed an early peak in 59Fe incorporation on day 6/7. Injections of erythropoietin earlier or later than between 8 and 32 hours after 5-FU had little or no effect, indicating that the induced erythropoiesis was not due to a carry-over of injected erythropoietin into the phase of spontaneous stem cell recovery. A delayed action on erythropoietin-sensitive stem cells present at the time of injection, or an action of erythropoietin on their precursors are considered as possible mechanism.
