Concerning the cross reactivity of anti-ECHO virus 1 immune serum with ECHO virus 12, previous publications (1,2) as well as our data on the domestic reference serum prepared in monkeys showed no evidence for the cross neutralization. However, Berg et al. (4) reported that these two serotypes crossed each other in rabbit immune sera with very low heterologous titers. They described that absorption of these sera with packed monkey kidney cells did not significantly reduce the neutralizing capacity of ECHO virus 1 antiserum against ECHO virus 12, but the efficiency of absorption of anti monkey kidney cell antibody, as described by Habel et al. (6), was not specified.
The present data are considered to substantiate that one way cross neutralization between ECHO virus types 1 and 12 so far reported had been due to the contamination of the antigen used to immunize animals. It is thus concluded that ECHO virus types 1 and 12 are unrelated serologically.
