Abstract
Summary
Cystaselenonine, the selenium analog of cystathionine, causes a hair loss in mice that is limited to the older growing hairs which have aged 16 days after mechanical epilation. The hair does not regrow for 20 days if the mice are treated with cystaselenonine for 12 days. The mice lose weight during treatment, but eventually recover. Cystaselenonine may act by interfering with sulfhydryl metabolism in the keratogenous zone of the hair follicle and not by interfering with mitosis.
