Summary
Glycerol, at the concentrations used in cell freezing and storage procedures, causes a large increase in the lipid content of cultured mammalian cells. Column chromatography on silicic acid of the isolated lipid indicates that the increase is due primarily to increases in polar lipids and triglycerides. The homologues of glycerol, ethylene glycol and erythritol, also increase cell lipid.
