Abstract
Summary
Femurs from normal and vitamin D-deficient rats are equally capable of taking up calcium in vitro. However, normal rat serum contains a vitamin D-dependent substance that stimulates the calcium uptake by bone. This factor which is not present in the serum from vitamin D-deficient rats, is apparently not vitamin D itself or a metabolic product of vitamin D; however, vitamin D may regulate the synthesis of this factor.
