Summary
One hundred and six isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans were investigated by agglutination and absorption studies with anti-cryptococcal sera. In addition to the three previously reported serotypes, a fourth serotype was distinguished and designated type D. Of the 106 isolates from man and nature, 69.8% were type A, 10.4% were type B, 6.6% were type C, and 4.7% were type D, 3.8% reacted with more than one serum, and 4.7% were untypable. The majority of type B and C strains were obtained from California, suggesting the possibility of major differences in the distribution of cryptococcal serotypes.
