Abstract
Summary
Perfused rat hearts subjected to anoxia rapidly stopped beating and did not recover when restored to oxygen 65 min later. However, anoxic beating was promoted by glucose in a concentration dependent fashion; maximal response was achieved at 20 mM. Addition of insulin or select Krebs cycle metabolites to the glucose (5 mM) perfusing medium further elevated anaerobic beating.
