Summary
Obesity is characterized by fasting hyperinsulinism and elevated IRI concentrations during and following an epinephrine infusion. Suppression of plasma IRI by epinephrine is normal in obese, nondiabetic subjects. The concept of sluggish alpha receptors cannot be invoked as a cause of the hyperinsulinism of obesity.
