Abstract
Summary
Hypophysectomy caused a 41% decrease in the concentration of IF in the fundic mucosa of the rat even when the food intake of control rats was limited to that of the hypophysectomized rats. Since the chief cell undergoes more profound involution and functional depression than any other cell type in the fundic gland, these observations point to the chief cell as being the source of IF production in the rat. Also, the normal elaboration of IF appears to be under hormonal control.
