Abstract
Summary
The acid-base composition of arterial blood and cerebrospinal fluid has been measured in 11 infants of low birth weight and in 13 children in order to establish normal values. The CSF data in children and the usually accepted normal data for adults were similar. The infants, however, showed a significant reduction in CSF pCO2 when compared to either children or adults. This undoubtedly reflects the lower values for plasma pCO2 which are typical of this age group.
