Abstract
Summary
Oral administration of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents phenyl-butazone and indomethacin prevented or reversed a urate-induced synovitis in unanes-thetized dogs. Acetylsalicylic acid, codeine, promazine, chlorpromazine, topical counter-irritants and intravenous hydrocortisone were inactive. This model of gouty arthritis may be useful in detecting and evaluating orally active nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents.
Appreciation is expressed to Merck Sharp & Dohme for indomethacin; to Geigy Pharmaceuticals for phenylbutazone; and to Parke, Davis & Co. for CI-583.
