Summary
Adrenalectomy had no effect on fasting canine Heidenhain pouch juice components. It reduced the volume, hydrogen ion and electrolyte output per minute of the secretion from pouches stimulated with histamine or food. The depression in stimulated gastric juice was greater when the dog was maintained with DCA than with cortisone. The slight stimulation of Heidenhain pouch secretion of intact dogs seen with aldosterone is probably an artifact related to the injections. Aldosterone had no effect on the resting or stimulated Heidenhain pouch secretion of adrenalectomized dogs whether they were well maintained with hormone or severely deficient. If aldosterone has an effect on electrolytes of gastric juice, it cannot be detected by measuring whole juice components of Heidenhain pouches.
