Summary
The influence of propylthiouracil and triiodothyronine (T3) on mammogenesis and post partum milk yield as well as on artificial hypothalamic lactation achieved by perphenazine treatment was studied in rats. It was found that propylthiouracil stimulates mammary gland growth but inhibits milk secretion in both post partum and perphenazine-induced hypothalamic lactation. Both effects were prevented by concurrent treatment with propylthiouracil and T3, suggesting that thyroid hormones at physiological levels interfere with mammary gland development in its preparatory stage, while they are essential for later stages of milk secretion.
