Abstract
Summary
The addition of nicotinamide adenylate compounds was found to maintain, to a significant extent, the glycolytic capacity of fresh human erythrocytes incubated in vitro for 20 hours. The compounds appeared to act also to restore the metabolism of aged cells. Although it is not believed that nucleotides readily enter the intracellular compartment, evidence is presented that erythrocytes can slowly assimilate adenine nucleoside phosphates. The possible role of erythrocyte phosphomonoesterase is discussed.
