Summary
Evidence is presented which further indicates that under specific conditions chondroitin sulfate A will act as a growth stimulating agent. Effective in tissue cultures in concentrations as low as those ascertained for several hormones, production of RNA, DNA and phospholipid is increased simultaneously within a few hours after application (the total extractable phospholipid is reduced indicating an increased rate of turnover), but the stimulating effect is gone by 24–48 hours. The demonstrated action of small amounts of chondroitin sulfate A in several types of cells, together with the finding that this material is normally present in human plasma in such amounts suggests that it may be a metabolic agent in the regulation of cell processes.
