Abstract
Summary
A colloidal dispersion of hamy-cin was prepared, bioassayed, and given par-enterally to mice infected with Cryptococcus neoformans or Histoplasma capsulatum. Either infection was sterilized in many mice when doses of hamycin approached toxic levels. Colloidal hamycin given orally controlled cryptococcosis in mice and caused no obvious toxicity. The rabbit was more sensitive than the mouse to the lethal effects of colloidal hamycin injected intravenously. The cause of death in the rabbit was cardiotoxic-ity.
Hamycin used in these experiments was obtained from Hindustan Antibiotics, Ltd., through the courtesy of M. J. Thirumalachar.
