Abstract
Summary
6-azauridine, an inhibitor of RNA metabolism, has been found to inhibit the synthesis of the DNA-containing vaccinia virus. The inhibition can be specifically removed by addition of uridine. The essential participation of RNA occurs early during the infectious sequence and is completed at about 6 hours after infection. Studies on vaccinial antigens and DNA production indicated that these biologic units are all dependent upon the production of this early RNA component.
