Abstract
Summary
1. BALB/c mice were placed in parabiotic union with 4 related (A, C3H, CBA, and DBA/2) and 2 unrelated (C57 BL/6 and C57BR) strains of mice. Hematocrits were read at 2-day intervals for a total period of 10 days. 2. The BALB/c para-bionts showed the same or an increased hematocrit at the 4th day of parabiosis while their homologous partners showed varying degrees of anemia, 3. Hematocrit differences between the BALB/c and homologous para-bionts increased with increasing genetic differences. 4. Seventy-one percent BALB/c mice (tolerant to BALB/c skin grafts) in parabiosis with isologous mice showed increased hematocrits at 4 days. This increase was maintained in 35% of the tolerant pairs.
