Summary
The effect of sodium chloride and protamine on the activity of postheparin‘lipoprotein'lipase was studied. Chylomicrons, low density lipoproteins and coconut oil emulsions stabilized with various emulsifying agents were used as substrate. Inhibition, stimulation, or no effect could be observed depending on the system used. The results are interpreted as indicating that where sodium chloride or protamine inhibit ‘lipoprotein’ lipase the site of the action is more likely to be at the oil-water interface of the substrate emulsion than on the enzyme molecule.
The emulsions used in this investigation were prepared with the assistance of Mr. J. W. Hadgraft, Chief Pharmacist, and his assistant Mr. C. W. Barrett.
