Abstract
Summary
Ovaries of cyclostomes (Petromyzon marinus) were examined for sex steroids. The ripe ovaries contain a minimum of 16 μg estradiol-17β/kilo of fresh ovarian tissue determined by the Astwood 6 hour assay. The biologically active material was identified as estradiol-17β and estrone by countercurrent distribution, paper chromatography and bioassay. Presence of progesterone was tentatively identified by methods of column chromatography and Hooker-Forbes assay.
