Abstract
Summary
Bifidus factor 2 of Raynaud(1) is required for growth of a strain of Lactobacillus bifidus maintained by serial transfer since its isolation by Tissier. This factor is of dual nature; it contains a) a peptide-like component and b) hypoxanthine. Growth is inhibited by adenine and, to a lesser extent, by guanine and xanthine. This inhibition is counteracted by hypoxanthine, which morerover will promote growth in the absence of adenine, guanine or xanthine.
