Abstract
Summary
S. aureus grown on whole blood agar produced a diffusible material which caused changes in the nitrogen, hemin and red cell content of the agar. Experiments using blood cells tagged with Cr51 indicated that the dense red band around the growth of the organism was due to a concentration of red blood cells which had been moved into the area of the band from the area just outside it.
