Summary and conclusions
The conflicting reports in the literature concerning production of extracellular penicillinase by Staphylococcus aureus were briefly reviewed and evaluated. Experimental evidence from studies utilizing agar diffusion and millipore filtration was presented from which it is concluded that the enzyme does indeed leave the staphylococcal cell.
