Abstract
Advanced quality systems (AQSs) are emerging as a framework for integrating and coordinating processes, specifications, modeling and analytical tools, testing technologies, databases, and educational capabilities that aim at improving highway construction quality. A comprehensive review of warranty specifications is presented and put in the context of AQS. Key driving factors of warranty specifications in the United States are identified; actual statewide warranty specifications for design-bid-build projects and project-specific warranty specifications for design-build projects are summarized, the concepts and elements of an AQS are laid out, and research needs for advancing warranty specifications within the context of AQSs are assessed.
