Abstract
This paper presents a first validation of the proposed incremental queue accumulation method (IQA) to estimate delay using the new high-resolution data sets generated as part of FHWA's Next Generation Simulation Model (NGSIM) project. The paper provides examples of the queuing process using vehicle trajectories from the NGSIM data set collected along Lankershim Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. The paper compares field measurements of delay with estimates produced by the IQA method and the existing Highway Capacity Manual method. Results indicate that the IQA method provides more realistic results than the existing method by directly tracking the vehicle arrival and departure process. The paper also notes that consideration must be given to actual queue lengths when validating a model that makes an assumption of a stacked vertical queue.
