Much misinformation has been disseminated about the fundamentals of heat-straightening repairs for damaged steel bridges. Providing the practitioner with an understanding of these fundamentals is the aim. Included are an explanation of why heat straightening works, how to classify damage, keys for successful heat straightening, fundamental heating patterns, how and why to control heating temperature, and the proper use of jacking forces. A practical understanding of heat straightening is provided.
