Abstract
Background: Isolated fractures of the sustentaculum tali of the calcaneus are rare and often missed upon initial presentation. There are few papers in the literature that comment on the management of these fractures. Materials and Methods: We reviewed four cases of fractures of the sustentaculum talus of the calcaneus treated with open reduction and internal fixation from one surgeon's 15-year practice. Results: This is a case report that describes the presentation, management and outcome of these four cases. Conclusions: In this small series of cases, operative treatment appears to have been appropriate. Direct anatomic approach with accurate open reduction and internal fixation has been relatively successful in these patients.
